Through the Fence: a collaborative photobook
We are pleased to say that our new book Through the Fence is now available for pre-orders.Three special photographers - Rob Knight, Mandy Davies and Ali Lewis - were each given 12 months to make and submit 20 images of any aspect of life on allotments or local community gardens. The book was further enhanced by a foreword written by Jeff Young. The 48-page hardback book will be available as signed and handmade editions. A signed edition with six of the images will also be available.With everyone giving their time for free, all profits from this book and prints will be donated to Trussell - they help ensure food banks can continue to offer dignity, hope and practical support to families in need.So, if you have any interest please read on and give serious consideration to making a pre-order and supporting such a worthwhile charity.We plan to publish the book in December 2025.

The Book
Three special photographers - Rob Knight, Mandy Davies and Ali Lewis - were each given 12 months to make and submit 20 images of any aspect of life on allotments or local community gardens. We wanted them to fully engage with the people who tend these areas over a significant period of time and bring this out in terms of the images they submitted.We then chose the best of their work for an overall sequence of 37 images that blends all of their work together. The book was further enhanced by a foreword written by Jeff Young (TLS Ackerley Prize winner, 2025).

About the Contributors
Photographs by:
Rob Knight is a photographer, educator, speaker, mentor and coach. He has many years’ experience of working with projects as a means to explore ideas and develop a connection to people and place. Rob is drawn to authentic interactions between people and place and the symbiotic relationships that shape and define them.
Mandy Davies began documenting her children’s time at school when that love of photography grew to the point that she now works for several local schools. Although she doesn’t like to label photographers she would categorise herself as street and documentary style. She was recently awarded an ARPS in Travel with her images on “Living in Venice”.
Ali Lewis discovered photography around seven years ago and it quickly became her passion when she would take herself off early in the mornings to a forest or hill and spend time exploring the details of nature. Whilst she enjoys landscape, she’s very drawn to the smaller, more intimate details.
Foreword by:
Jeff Young is a writer for stage, radio and screen based in Liverpool. His book “Ghost Town - A Liverpool Shadowplay” (2020, Little Toller Books) takes a journey through haunted places of memory and loss, summoning the ghosts of loved ones and long departed heroes who sometimes still occupy the disappearing nooks and crannies of Liverpool. The book was shortlisted for the Costa and Portico Prizes. Jeff’s latest book "Wild Twin" (2024, Little Toller Books) - a hallucinatory love song to cities, continues his story and was awarded the TLS Ackerley Prize for 2025.Photo: Brian Roberts

John Ash is an enthusiastic amateur photographer who especially loves landscapes. He self published two books in 2020 - Shoganai and Shinrin-Yoku which both demonstrate a more project-based emphasis to his work. John hand-makes his own photobooks.Website
